I’m sure Ahmalamadingdong is shaking in his boots.
In a lame attempt to look like Mr. Tough Guy (can you say “focus group?”), Barack Obama now says he would lay the whoop down on Iran if necessary:
While he was being attacked in Washington, Obama was in friendly territory in Chicago as he appeared at a forum attended by 800 members of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, an influential pro-Israel lobby. He received a standing ovation from the crowd and a hug from one of the group’s leaders.
Obama said global leaders must do whatever it takes [emph. added] to stop Iran from enriching uranium and acquiring nuclear weapons. He called Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad “reckless, irresponsible and inattentive” to the day-to-day needs of the Iranian people.
The Iranian “regime is a threat to all of us,” Obama said.
While Obama wouldn’t rule out force, he said the United States should engage in “aggressive diplomacy combined with tough sanctions” to prevent Iran from becoming a nuclear threat.
A question for Mr. Obama: How is the developing situation in Iran so different from the one preceding our invasion of Iraq–you know, that war you so strongly oppose? Saddam was trying like hell to get nukes, too, and was most definitely “reckless, irresponsible and inattentive to the day-to-day needs of” his people. The reasons Obama sees Iran as such a threat, a threat possibly requiring force, were the precise reasons we went to war with Iraq: (1) crazy cuckoo-bird dictator obsessively seeking weapons of mass destruction (2) who horrifically oppresses his own people. Yet Obama is a part of the Quagmire crowd, proudly reminds us as often as possible that he never voted for the Iraq war (unlike his rivals for the Democratic nomination), and now demands immediate surrender and retreat from Iraq. What contempt he must have for the intelligence of the American people. What a transparent, sorry attempt to look “presidential.” I get what he’s going for: he’s trying to look like JFK, who in spite of his personal flaws was an honest-to-God hero, a Cold War warrior, a great man. Obama isn’t fit to tie Kennedy’s shoes.
Of course, his escape hatch is built into his carefully crafted words; namely, his preference for “aggressive diplomacy combined with tough sanctions.” When it comes down to it, Obama can always just keep insisting on more diplomacy, more UN sanctions, forever and ever, amen, no matter what. He knows he can worm his way out of taking any meaningful action.
After all, sanctions and chitchat work soooo well with crazy Muslims. Remember the 12 years of diplomacy and sanctions levelled against Saddam, Mr. Obama? Remember the billions and billions of dollars Saddam funneled to himself from the Oil-for-Food program, aided and abetted by our “friends” in the UN? http://www.cfr.org/publication/7631/iraq.html
What, exactly, does Obama expect “aggressive diplomacy” and UN sanctions to achieve with Iran? Ahmadinejad has made it perfectly clear that he has no intention of cooperating with UN resolutions and considers them meaningless and invalid. Here’s an article quoting him on one of the many occasions he’s said such things: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/01/02/world/main2321311.shtml
Iran has also recently blocked UN nuclear inspectors from entering the country. Hmm, wonder why they would do that? Maybe because they’re building nuclear weapons? http://apnews.myway.com/article/20070122/D8MQEPHG1.html
Ahmadinejad is also fond of declaring to the world that the U.S. and Israel (sometimes he throws Great Britain in there too) will be destroyed or “wiped off the map” or “removed from the earth.” In fact, he seems to say it almost every time a microphone is put in front of him. Yet Obama wants to dicker and palaver with the lunatic. Mark my words, the most President Barack Obama would ever do–even if Iran attacked Israel–would be to launch a couple weak-ass cruise missiles at tents in the Iranian desert, and Ahmadinejad knows it. We’ve come to a pretty pass when a bloodthirsty psychotic like Ahmadinejad has a better grasp of reality than the party controlling Congress, and potentially half of the American electorate. With a self-parodying empty suit like Barack Obama leading the pack of Democratic contenders and being relentlessly fawned upon by the mainstream American media, no wonder the Iranian “President” is so confident that radical Islam will triumph over the West.
