Bad Move, Girlfriend

Here’s the video of Ann Coulter referring to John Edwards as a “faggot”:

Normally I love Ann, but she screwed up big-time here.  I understand the point she was trying to make: that it’s ridiculous for someone to have to go to rehab to atone for using a rude word, as Grey’s Anatomy star Isaiah Washington had to do in order to save his job.  But she could’ve made that point many other ways, with many other jokes.  Using the word “faggot” as an insult against a heterosexual man is a terrible slur against gays, and no decent person should use the word that way.  Ann is a flamethrower, but she is a decent person–so much better than what she said.  I hope she’ll apologize.  However, I also wish people would keep her remarks in perspective: unfortunately, what Ann said is not unusual by any means.  Unlike the “N” word, the words “gay” and “fag” are still used thoughtlessly by many people who are not in the least homophobic, to signify that something/someone is lame or pathetic.  It’s pretty standard slang that, to be honest, I used myself from time to time until an openly gay friend of mine pointed out how hurtful and insulting it is to gays.  I was ashamed that I had not reflected on it before, and immediately stopped using those words in that way.  I hope Ann will do the same, but I also hope that everyone will look at their own language before judging her too harshly.

I think it’s ridiculous to “ban” words and throw protracted media hissy fits every time a public figure says something rude, but that doesn’t remove our responsibility to treat one another with basic respect.  It’s not surrending to the Orwellian speech police to be considerate of others’ feelings like our mommas (hopefully) taught us.

  1. Agreed, Ann messed up. I love her sense of humor, but this premeditated dig could have been done much better. The Isaiah Washington / rehab thing deserved to be skewered, but not in this way. She just gave ammo to her enemies.

  2. Exactly. It’s doubly frustrating because so many of the libs whipped up into a righteous froth about the whole thing are so free and easy with name-calling themselves: has any one of them ever apologized for calling Bush a Nazi or a fascist?
