At this moment I’m watching Arcade Fire perform on SNL. I like their overall sound–love it, actually–or thought I did, but is it too much to ask that professional musicians be able to sing? They don’t have to be classically trained opera singers; actually, my favorite singers have odd voices and know how to use them to great effect (e.g., Rufus Wainwright). But I’m sorry–at the very least, a person paid to sing should be ABLE TO FUCKING SING. This is a major pet peeve of mine (obviously)–these Artiste types who can’t be troubled to carry a tune and develop breath control; this hiding behind the studio and utter disrespect of the true medium of musicianship, the live performance.
As I was typing that last paragraph, the lead singer ended the song by smashing his guitar to pieces onstage. Wow. Could anyone be lamer? Henry Rollins could pull that off, but the lead singer of Arcade Fire? Don’t think so. And just in case he was trying to be “ironic,” damn, that makes it even worse.
